TomTom's popular navigation app for iOS got a big update this week, and chief among the new features is optimization for the iPad's 9.7-inch display. Version 1.9 of the $49.99 app is a universal binary, available on recent iPhone and iPod touch models, and both iPad generations. Functionality is mostly unchanged, but the app does use the larger screen to do things like split-screen Lane Guidance and regular driving view. The big difference between this and other GPS applications is that all of the map data is stored on your phone, so no Internet connection is required to calculate routes. Either TomTom’s startin’ to feel the burn of the incredibly competitive (and arguably crumbling) navigation app market, or they’re just feeling generous for the holidays. Either way, now’s the time to buy if you were considering snatching up any of TomTom’s U.S. apps.

Given the intense competition in the turn-by-turn app wars, TomTom is offering an alternative to their $99 original version by ditching Canada and dropping the price to $50. Man, if dropping Canada cuts the price of an app in half, that says a lot about how much money we waste on international maps. They should offer this option to all of the countries they serve. However, there are plenty of cheaper versions out there, not to mention free Google Navigation.

Most agree that the original TomTom iPhone app is a tad overpriced at $99 for just the app. That doesn’t include the $119 windshield mount. Esspecially now that Google has made its mark on the GPS market with the free Google Maps Navigation app. And so that brings us to the latest TomTom GPS app. This one is US-only, but only costs $50.
