    January 25th at 9:07pm / GigaOM / 0 opinions

As some app development teams race to include as many new features in their navigation apps as they can, others are creating complementary features outside those same apps. Perhaps there is no ‘one’ best solution anymore.

  • TomTom iOS update brings GPS navigation to iPad

    October 24th at 2:52pm / The Verge / 0 opinions

TomTom's popular navigation app for iOS got a big update this week, and chief among the new features is optimization for the iPad's 9.7-inch display. Version 1.9 of the $49.99 app is a universal binary, available on recent iPhone and iPod touch models, and both iPad generations. Functionality is mostly unchanged, but the app does use the larger screen to do things like split-screen Lane Guidance and regular driving view. The update also brings new maps, faster performance, and a new, simpler interface...

  • App review: TomTom for iPhone

    July 15th at 1:00pm / TechCrunch / 0 opinions

For the last couple of months I’ve been using the TomTom USA navigation app for iPhone. The big difference between this and other GPS applications is that all of the map data is stored on your phone, so no Internet connection is required to calculate routes. This is great when you’re in a dead zone, but it carries a hefty penalty in terms of file size: almost 1.5GB! Read on for more details.

  • The Apps Updated for iOS 4

    June 21st at 9:30pm / Gizmodo / 0 opinions

Apple's iOS 4 has arrived, bringing multitasking and more to iPhones and iPod Touches everywhere (iTunes willing). Here are the apps that already take advantage of the new OS, and some that should be hitting the App Store soon. In the App Store NOW: • Dropbox - Sync your Dropbox files in the background. • Evernote - Download and upload notes in the background, and continue recording voice notes while you're messing around in other apps. • Zagat • LinkedIN • How To Cook Everything • Trapster...

  • The Myth of iPhone App Piracy

    March 1st at 5:00pm / Gizmodo / 0 opinions

People rarely talk about iPhone app piracy, but when they do, it sounds devastating: 90% piracy rates, $450 million in lost sales, etc. Here's the truth: App Store piracy isn't a big deal—and it never will be. With these shockingly high reports comes the general air that developers are being marauded and pillaged by Viking hordes and that Apple isn't doing enough to stop it. This resonates! Developers don't control much about the App Store, so if the entire app protection system has been cracked—...

  • CrunchDeals: TomTom U.S. iPhone Apps now 30% off

    December 14th at 3:01pm / TechCrunch / 0 opinions

Either TomTom’s startin’ to feel the burn of the incredibly competitive (and arguably crumbling) navigation app market, or they’re just feeling generous for the holidays. Either way, now’s the time to buy if you were considering snatching up any of TomTom’s U.S. apps.

  • TomTom Releases $50 US-Only iPhone App

    December 11th at 10:38pm / Gizmodo / 0 opinions

Given the intense competition in the turn-by-turn app wars, TomTom is offering an alternative to their $99 original version by ditching Canada and dropping the price to $50. Man, if dropping Canada cuts the price of an app in half, that says a lot about how much money we waste on international maps. They should offer this option to all of the countries they serve. However, there are plenty of cheaper versions out there, not to mention free Google Navigation.

  • TomTom wises up, releases $49.99 USA-only GPS app

    December 11th at 2:47pm / TechCrunch / 0 opinions

Most agree that the original TomTom iPhone app is a tad overpriced at $99 for just the app. That doesn’t include the $119 windshield mount. Esspecially now that Google has made its mark on the GPS market with the free Google Maps Navigation app. And so that brings us to the latest TomTom GPS app. This one is US-only, but only costs $50.
